KC"s Driving School - How It Works
|
Drivers Ed Requirements
In Wisconsin, if you are under 18, you must take an approved driver education course in order to
get your license. KCs Driving School has been approved to do this for over 22 years.
History Of KC"s
Kathy started the school in Watertown in 1986 and her husband, who worked for the DMV for
30 years, helped her along. Eventually, several other family members started their own KCs
Driving School. There are now 6 locators that are KCs and many others that are named
something else throughout the State of Wisconsin.
We are a small family run business. We are NOT perfect, but we do our very best. The safety of
teen drivers is our main concern and we are always looking for new and better ways to educate
them in driving. Our staffs of instructors are second to none. Each instructor is carefully chosen
and screened for ability and character. We do not hire off the street and instructors must always
come with a strong referral. It has been difficult over the years finding instructors because of the
strict standards we uphold.
Graduated Driver Licensing
In the year 2000 Wisconsin enacted the GDL. This is a 3 step process to take a young driver
from no license to a full privilege Regular license.
The Steps are as follows:
Instruction Permit
To get a permit they must;
1. Be enrolled in drivers education.
- Enrollment takes place the first day of class.
- We send an enrollment form via email prior to the first day of class or students complete
it on the first day.
2. They must be 15
- They can NOT go to the DMV before they turn 15 1/2
3. They must pass the written test.
4. They must present documents;
1. MV3001 temps application form Signed and Dated, with a date that is less than 60
days old, by their driving school. This certifies that they will begin behind the wheel
lessons within 60 days of the signature date.
2. A government issued original birth certificate.
3. Social Security Card - if you dont have the card bring the number and another
form of ID such as the students school ID.
4. The students parent or legal guardian must sign their MV3001 temps application
at the DMV with the student.
Probationary License The first solo license issued. Points double after the first ticket.
To get a probationary license they must;
A. Complete 30 hours of classroom
- if they miss a day they must make of the session in a future class or other make up
method. The instructor will work with the STUDENT to get them their make up
requirement. Missing a day does NOT affect the students ability to get their permit,
however, they must complete their class make up prior to taking their road test.
B. Complete 6 hours of driving and 6 hours observing.
- Each lesson is 2 hours long, they drive 1 hour and then observe another student drive the
second hour.
2. Have their permit for 6 months OR MORE.
- During this six months or more they must accumulate at least 30 hours of driving
experience (10 hours must be at night). These hours are done with their parents. When
they drive with their parents their immediate family members can be in the car, NO ONE
else.
3. Pass the road test
- They will present their State Certificate of Completion from KCs Driving School. They
will receive their completion certificate AFTER their LAST BTW.
4. Have their parent or legal guardian sign stating that they are in school and have
completed at least 30 hours of driving 10 of which was at night.
What You Take To The DMV When You Go To Get Your Instruction Permit
- This will be signed after students turn 15 .
2. Birth Certificate or Passport
3. Social Security Card
4. Parent
5. $$
60 DAY Rule - First Behind The Wheel Lesson
- Students must have their 1st BTW within 60 days from the date we sign their application
for instruction permit (MV3001).
Behind The Wheel Lessons
There are six lessons two hours long each. They drive one hour and observe another student
the second hour.
-Most students do their lessons about 3 weeks apart. However, it is up to students to
schedule their appointments. Students need to make sure that they complete their BTWs in
time for them to get their license.
- You will get more info about BTW"s while students are in class.
