12/16/09. I am getting a late start at putting the build log together. Bare with me while I get it updated. It is not a comprehensive log. I
didn't intend to keep such a log, just figured I would throw something together just to satisfy the FAA requirement. Don't use this as an
example how to build your plane.

I have been around airplanes a long time. For more than 20 years I have dreamed of building a plane. Now, as the family has grown up a
bit and we have settled down, the time has come to make it happen.

Financially it is a big undertaking. However, I have saved most of what will be spent and though expensive, it's hard to put a price tag on
fulfilling a dream.

Making the decision to build a Van's aircraft took place more than 15 years ago. I always liked their styling and quality. They have
several models to choose from and can be seen here
www.vansaircraft.com . I really like the RV4. Probably would be the next plane I
build. However, I wanted to have a side-by-side model as it is great for snuggling with my wife. I do NOT like aerobatics except
spectating at air shows or flightsim. Also, my main mission for the plane is cross-country flying with the potential for IFR operations.
The RV 9/ 9a matches that profile perfectly. It is still highly maneuverable and is capable of doing limited aerobatics. Also, has a
respectable cruise speed of about 185 mph and will produce gross weight climb rates of more than 1000 feet per minute. All this while
consuming about 8 gallons of gas an hour or about 25mpg.

I am not building a plane that will be a show piece. If you are looking for mistakes and goofs, you'll find plenty. I am building my airplane
as a means to get me where I want to travel not to show off its perfection. That isn't to say that I don't appreciate fine examples of the
RV. There are many out there and the builders should be very proud. I just don't have the patience to make it perfect. Just airworthy and
functional. That is my goal.

Tony Phillips Van's RV 9 Builder Log
Van's RV 9 tail wheel with a tip-up canopy.

Why at Tail wheel? - Well, I think they look cool. Also, a bit more tricky
to fly. As a Certified Flight Instructor I have gotten bored with landing
even in severe crosswinds. I figure this will always keep me on my
toes.

Why a Tip-Up? - I have flown in a slider. Being 6'2" I found the canopy
frame to be in my vision too much. Also, I think they look good.

My avionics will be
Dynon Skyview, Garmin SL30 and GTX 327. Pretty
minimal to start. I will add stuff later.

My
ECI engine kit was purchased through AERO. I was told it would
take 10-12 weeks to get the kit and it was ordered on 11/30/09. I hope
to get it by the end of Feb.

I plan to use a 2 axis autopilot by Dynon. It is wired, but the servos will
come later.

I am leaning toward a
Catto fixed pitch prop.
